From the Tanner Humanities website:

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. Broadcasts have now been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included The Audience starring Helen Mirren; Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; Yerma starring Billie Piper, Macbeth starring Kenneth Branagh, and Follies starring Imelda Staunton.

Each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre and cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.

Venues view the broadcasts ‘as live’ according to their time zone or at a later date – which is where we come in. The Tanner Humanities Center started broadcasting National Theatre Live productions in 2010 at the University of Utah’s historic Post Theatre. Shortly thereafter, screenings moved to Tower Theatre before finally landing at Salt Lake Film Society‘s Broadway Centre Cinemas in downtown Salt Lake.”

Live Q&A with Renan Ozturk 5/14

Join us on Saturday 5/14 for an in-person Q&A with co-director Renan Ozturk following the 7 pm screening of The Sanctity Of Space.

In the documentary, opening Friday at Broadway, three friends are inspired by the photography of legendary explorer Brad Washburn to traverse some of Alaska’s most challenging peaks. Get tickets now here-> The Sanctity of Space.

From his website:

“Renan lives to tell stories about our connection to the natural world, often set within the most challenging environments on Earth. He’s constantly searching for projects that move him — films that have a strong visual identity matched with some deeply compelling human element.

He began his career as an expedition climber and landscape artist, spending years living in a tent beneath the big walls of U.S. National Parks and in the snowy Himalayan mountains. All of his paintings were created on expedition, carrying large cotton canvases on his back, sometimes even using natural pigments pulled straight from the earth to capture these wildly beautiful landscapes. He received National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2013 for his combination of cutting-edge first ascents and visual storytelling.

Currently, Renan works as a commercial and documentary filmmaker, an expedition climber for The North Face, and a photojournalist for Sony and National Geographic. The films he’s made over the years have had a global presence; he’s probably best known for MERU (cinematographer/subject), which won the 2015 Audience Choice Award at Sundance, and the critically acclaimed Sherpa (cinematographer/co-director), which screened at TIFF and Telluride. He’s directed and shot commercial work for major international brands such as Apple, Google, DJI and Nike.”

45 min | 2020 | USA | Not Rated | English

Directed by Chris Simon and Susette Weisheit

Ken Sleight watched the place he called home, Glen Canyon on the Colorado River in Utah, slowly drown under the waters of Lake Powell. That loss changed him from an old-school conservative into an environmental activist who will do anything to protect the canyons of the American Southwest. He’s faced down raging bulldozers from the back of his horse. Monkey wrenched? He’ll never tell – but he was the inspiration for Seldom Seen Smith in his buddy Ed Abbey’s classic book THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG. Now in his 90s, he’s still fighting for Glen Canyon Dam to be brought down and the Colorado River to run free. Climate change may make that a real possibility.
